Reciprocal learning allows an open forum between students and teachers and also student to student. The teacher helps guide questions to help the process of thinking between students. Then the students build off of questions and ideas amongst their classmates. This helps in close reading because it is teaching a child to pay attention to what they are reading, analyze the words, make predictions and also summarize what they are reading. Eventually, the students will be able to direct the conversation about the reading material. This is due to the modeling of the teacher. After the students have a clear understanding of what they are doing and the types of questions that need to be asked they will be able to help one another find the meaning of what they are reading. The ultimate goal is eventually the child will be a close reader on their own. I would say close reading falls under cognitive theory because this theory states that learning occurs when the student builds on learned behaviors. Furthermore, learning is facilitated when the student builds relationships between concepts and ideas.
Reciprocal teaching helps students comprehend what they are reading more deeply and clearly. The first step in reciprocal teaching is “Asking a question.” By asking a question it gets the student’s brains working before they even start to read the book. Secondly, you want the students to “Get definition of unfamiliar words that have been presented. By gaining an understanding of the terminology used in the book, the students will be able to get a clearer understanding of what they are reading or what each character is doing. Thirdly, the students are to summarize the information they have been giving in the past or prior to the class. Lastly, the students are to give their own predictions on what will happen in the book or story. By following these few steps, it is possible that the comprehension level of your students will go from average to above average.
BELOW IS MY WORK, I HOPE THIS WILL HELP YOU WITH THE WORK ABOVE (PLEASE NO FEEDBACK FOR MY WORK THANK YOU GUYS)
1. How students assume responsibility for helping each other learn during reciprocal teaching
Reciprocal teaching is a teaching where there is exercise of cooperation where there is the use of models of natural dialogue. It also helps with revealing the thinking processes that are related to the learning experience that is shared. During the process of reciprocal teaching, the students can assume responsibility by (Ascd.org):
· The students own their roles during reciprocal teaching by expressing their ideas freely. This also entails voicing their opinions in some dialogue that is openly conducted. During this process they:
i. Take turns as they articulate and making their thoughts known through talking.
ii. The members of a certain group occasionally take turns as they assume the position of the leader of the discussion group.
2. How reciprocal teaching helps students better understand what they read
Reciprocal teaching helps the students with enhanced understanding of that which they read by:
· Giving the learners who are novice the ability of learning and internalizing the strategies that has been employed by the excellent readers
· It promotes the ability of the students to comprehend what they encounter during reading.
3. How reciprocal teaching relates to the idea of close reading used in the Common Core Standard
Close reading gives the students to read and to have be able to get the meanings that can later lead to some deep comprehension. On the other hand, reciprocal teaching has been given a design to help with improving the comprehension of reading by the students. Reciprocal teaching gives the students the chance to run their own discussions. This proves the relationship that exists between close reading and reciprocal teaching. The fact that close reading consists of stress on the necessity of taking a close analysis of the texts in a thorough way and with the use of a given method also shows the relationship between the two(Ascd.org).
Which educational psychology theories reciprocal teaching draws from and an explanation of the reason I think the theories are used for the sake of reciprocal teaching.
· Vygotsky’s theory-the theory states that when one thinks aloud and then have the thoughts disused, the individual will be assisted with having clarification and subsequent revision of their thinking process as well as their learning process hence developing cognition (Epltt.coe.uga.edu). It is used to help with the identification of the necessary texts and the subsequent scaffolding activities to help with supporting the success of the students.
