Read “Bring Back Flogging” by Jeff Jacoby –
Read the instructions below when you are finished reading the article.
Summarize the author’s text as succinctly as possible, and then write an evaluation of the text regarding its efficacy as an argument.
The first paragraph should grab the reader’s attention with a hook. Then you should summarize the author’s argument. The summary should begin by telling us the name of the author and the essay as well as the main idea (as you see it) of the entire essay, before going on to tell us the particulars of how the author expands on that idea, what examples they use, and so on. When doing your summary of the text, work as much as possible to put the writer’s ideas into your own words by paraphrasing their ideas – avoid direct quotations except when you are including them as part of your own prose, and avoid using the writer’s way of structuring the ideas when recounting them. The summary portion of your paper should be no more than a paragraph or two.
The rest of the paper should make an evaluative argument about the efficacy of the author’s own argument, with a thesis that states whether the argument is a strong one, a weak one, or somewhere between strong and weak. To prove this point to your audience, you should address how the argument is constructed, how well it makes its points, how it uses evidence to support those points, and so on. You should also use the argumentative terms we have covered in class wherever possible, such as talking about the pathos, ethos, or logos used by the author; whether the author uses inductive or deductive reasoning, and how effectively; whether the argument is meant to be convincing or persuasion; and so on. In any case, the argument should not be a simple “I liked this essay” or “I disagreed with this essay” – you should use your argument to prove why you think the author’s essay works or does not work as an argument, whether the argument would be effective for its intended audience, what could’ve been stronger, or whether the argument would still be effective now. And finally, except perhaps in the conclusion, you should not state whether you personally agree or disagree with the author’s argument.
Your paper should be at least 1000 words in length. Typed in Times New Roman, 12 sized font, and must be double spaced. Again, this essay is strictly needed by 9PM (CST) TODAY.
